Invisible Lady (1809-1857)

Fabric, beads, chain
228 cm x 127 cm
2017

Isabella Macdonald was a chronic invalid who was diagnosed with hysteria. Her husband
Sir John A Macdonald often referred to her as the “Invisible Lady” in his letters. This
work questions this labelling of women and their mental health conditions by riffing on
the log cabin quilt motif, a symbol of ideal domesticity.
