Cartwright's Stable

Straw, lace, crinoline fabric, satin, old blankets
254 cm x 203 cm
2018

During Rockwood Asylum’s tenure as a countryside estate outside Kingston, a neighbour wrote a poem about the property’s stable as an exemplary building. Knowing the stable’s later use housing female mental health patients, these words become ironic and caustic. This work appropriates the
poem on a form resembling a straw tick mattress which each patient would have slept on.
